Options considered for 2018 bridge walk

MACKINAW CITY, MI--   The Mackinac Bridge Authority is considering different options for next year’s Labor Day Bridge Walk.

The bridge was closed during this year’s walk, which lasted until noon, but many people weren’t able to participate due to a 10 a.m. cutoff time.

MBA staff have come up with possible changes to the walk. They include starting the walk from both St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. Walkers could either go to the middle point and return or walk the whole bridge and back. There would be no buses.

Another option includes flipping the start to Mackinaw City—where 80 percent of walk participants arrive—with busing from St. Ignace.

A third option would start the walk in St. Ignace but use a larger loading bus area in Mackinaw City. Officials say about 24,000 people could be transported to the starting line in time to complete the walk.

The options are posted at mackinacbridge.org.
