Fire engulfs Houghton County school bus, no kids on board

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI— A Houghton County school bus was destroyed by fire Thursday.

WLUC-TV reports sheriff’s deputies responded around 7 a.m. to the vehicle on Askel Road at the intersection of Michaelson and Aspen Roads.

The bus driver had just begun her route when the bus lost its power steering. She pulled the empty bus to the side of the road. Sparks came from the engine when a mechanic lifted the hood. That started a fire, which was put out with a fire extinguisher, but the fire reignited and fully engulfed the bus.

No injuries were reported. The bus is considered a total loss.

The Otter Lake and Pelkie Fire Departments assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
