Cause of Manistique apartment building fire unknown

MANISTIQUE, MI— Two Manistique apartments were damaged by fire Monday afternoon.

The Manistique Public Safety Department was dispatched around 1:50 p.m. to the 600 block of Garden Avenue. Officers and firefighters with the Manistique Volunteer Fire Department saw smoke coming out of a second-floor window. The building was found to contain upper and lower apartments.

Crews encountered heavy smoke and extreme heat in the upstairs apartment, but they were able to control the fire within minutes. Neither apartment was occupied at the time of the fire.

Upstairs suffered extensive fire, smoke, and heat damage. Downstairs had minor water damage.

The origin of the fire was identified, but the actual cause is unknown.
