MARQUETTE, MI— A presentation on redevelopment plans for the former Marquette General Hospital site will be given to the Marquette City Commission in a special meeting on Monday.
The NMU Foundation is leading a consortium of public and private partners to facilitate redevelopment of the area. It’s securing a master developer to create affordable housing, retail and community space.
Officials say the size and scale of the buildings that will need to be removed represents a significant cost and barrier to redevelopment. They say the project will not be able to proceed with almost $20 million of demolition and asbestos abatement without Brownfield tax increment financing support.
The City Commission will set a hearing on the Brownfield plan for May 31.
The special meeting takes place Monday at 5:15 p.m. in Commission chambers.
