Video shows dangerous falling ice on Mighty Mac

Michigan Department of Transportation

ST. IGNACE, MI— The Mackinac Bridge Authority and Michigan Department of Transportation have released a video showing why the Mighty Mac needs to close when ice falls from its cables and towers.

The footage includes table-sized sheets and 20-foot-long spears of ice shattering on the bridge deck. Closing the bridge removes the possibility that a person in a vehicle could be injured—or even killed—by falling chunks of ice.

Officials say they know it’s a big inconvenience when people can’t cross the Straits, but it’s a “cut and dried” decision when ice forms and falls.
