Mackinac Bridge hit by crane, no structural damage reported

ST. IGNACE, MI— The Mackinac Bridge needs minor repairs but is structurally sound, after it was hit by a boom crane earlier this month.

The U.S. Coast Guard says a tug and barge company was towing the crane behind it on May 7th when the cargo struck the main span of the bridge above the shipping channel.

Mackinac Bridge Authority spokesman James Lake says paint was knocked off and steel was scraped but the damage poses no danger to drivers.

MBA engineers have checked out the bridge several times and will perform a more thorough inspection before the Memorial Day weekend.

The Authority is working with the state Attorney General’s Office to have the transport company cover the cost of repairs.
