MARQUETTE, MI— Michigan State Police in the Upper Peninsula will wear body cameras starting this week.
Troopers have been equipped with in-car cameras. Much of their interaction with citizens during traffic stops has been captured on the video or audio on those cameras. Now, that interaction will also be recorded by body-worn cameras.
Officials say the BWCs will improve officer safety and documentation of traffic violations, reduce frivolous lawsuits, and aid in criminal, civil, and internal investigations.
Deployment of the BWCs was made possible by a $3.8 million ongoing state general fund appropriation, as well as $2 million in grant funding from the Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance.
