Wisconsin man missing, children found dead in Bay of Green Bay following sailing trip

GREEN BAY, WI— The search continues for a Wisconsin man whose children were found dead in the Bay of Green Bay after they went sailing Saturday.

Sunday around 12:42 p.m., the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office was notified that 32-year-old Bill Salnik of Little Suamico did not make it to his planned destination after he went boating with his 3- and 5-year-old children. They were last seen on Green Island.

No one had contact with Salnik since Saturday around 5 p.m.

Monday around 6:40 a.m., the Door County Sheriff’s office reported that an unmanned 18-foot Gulf Coast sailboat was found in the waters off of Chambers Island. At 11:21 a.m., the bodies of the two children were recovered about one mile south of where the boat was located.

Land, sea and air searches continue for Salnik. Deputies are working in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, United States Coast Guard, City of Oconto Police Department, Oconto County Emergency Management, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and Dispatch Center, Oconto Fire & Rescue, and other local public safety partners.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
