Marquette to put $8 million grant toward old hospital demolition

MARQUETTE, MI— The City of Marquette has been awarded up to $8 million to help clear the old Marquette General Hospital site.

The Community Development Block Grant will be used for building demolition, relocation of utilities, and removal of buried debris and site contamination.

The total estimated cost of the Blight Clearance Project is $12.7 million. It’s supported by InvestUP, the NMU Foundation, local legislators, community stakeholders, and residents. The City of Marquette will serve as project grantee and will provide expedited review and permitting as part of the process.

The NMU Foundation has created a website to share information about the project. It includes reports and documents related to its work of aligning relationships and resources required to demolish and prepare the site for future use. The website address is www.renewcollegeavemqt.org.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
