Native lending institution gets USDA loan to finance housing

L'ANSE, MI— An Upper Peninsula Native Community Development Financial Institution is partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to expand homeownership on tribal lands.

The Lake Superior Community Development Corporation in L’Anse is getting a $500,000 loan to finance five homes.

USDA is providing the funding through the Native CDFI Relending Demonstration Program. It provides loans to NCDFIs to relend to eligible homebuyers on Native lands.

Michigan is one of eight states to benefit from the program.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
