Northern Arts & Culture: Stories in Music with the Pine Mountain Music Festival

Pine Mountain Music Festival

An interview with Dani Simandl and Scott Flavin

Stories in Music is the name of the next iteration of the Pine Mountain Music Festival, coming to locations across the Upper Great Lakes this June. This year's festival, coming after cancellations and changes due to the pandemic, brings new energy with a three-person festival direction staff.

Pine Mountain Music Festival was founded in Iron Mountain, Michigan, in 1991 by Laura Jean Demin, who was a cellist and member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Orchestra. This year, there are new concerts alongside familiar favorites. New offerings include Children's Puppet Workshops, Peak Performance Workshops, and pop-up mini-concerts.

We spoke with two of the three directors, Dani Simandl (Co-Executive Director) and Scott Flavin (Artistic Director). Libby Meyer is also a Co-Executive Director.

Kurt lives in Marquette with his family and can’t imagine living anywhere else. He loves music, games, running, being near water, and a fine cold brew coffee.
