news.nmu.edu

Using identity to create a relevant voice in music

NOTE: This story was originally published on Friday, February 18th, 2022 in advance of a performance that was canceled due to inclement weather. Adam Sadberry's performance, titled "Togetherness" (with pianist Wynona Wang) is rescheduled for Monday, October 17th at 7:30 pm EST in the Reynolds Recital Hall.

Adam will also join the Marquette Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, October 15th at 7:30 pm to perform Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2 in D Major.

As a performer in the Siril Endowment for the Musical Arts Series, he becomes one of many musical artists to help expose students to a wide variety of music genres.

Adam is the principal flutist in the Memphis Symphony, having received his bachelor's degree from the Eastman School of Music. He also spent time as the African-American Orchestra Fellow with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

He tells a musical story as "musical journalism," to expand awareness of equity, representation, music education, and of the black diaspora. He also presents Using Your Identity to Create a Relevant Voice in Music, a presentation that helps musicians "use their experiences and perspectives as a catalyst for change through music."

We spoke with Adam to get an insight into his performance history, his musical journalism, and what to expect from the recital at NMU:

Kurt lives in Marquette with his family and can’t imagine living anywhere else. He loves music, games, running, being near water, and a fine cold brew coffee.
