An interview with Beverly and former U.P. Poet Laureate Marty Achatz

There's a new Upper Peninsula Poet Laureate: Beverly Matherne.

Along with her new title, Beverly is professor emerita of English at Northern Michigan University, the former director of the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing, a poetry editor of Passages North, and an author of poetry books. She's won prizes for her poetry, including the Hackney Literary Award for Poetry.

Beverly plans to visit middle and high school classrooms throughout the Upper Peninsula, where she will promote poetry through interactive lessons and writing activities.

Public Radio 90's Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Beverly, along with the former U.P. Poet Laureate (and current Vice President of the U.P. Poet Laureate Foundation) Marty Achatz:

Kurt lives in Marquette with his family and can’t imagine living anywhere else. He loves music, games, running, being near water, and a fine cold brew coffee.
