LANSING, MI (AP)-- Democratic Michigan gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer says he'll take public campaign funds for the August primary.
The decision allows him to receive up to $990,000 in public money until the primary, for which he has no opponent.
Candidates who accept matching funds for an election generally are limited to spending $2 million.
Schauer spokesman Zach Pohl said Tuesday that there's no plan to take public money for the November general election, but no final decision has been made.
Republican Governor Rick Snyder is seeking re-election. He didn't accept public money during 2010 after spending more than $6 million of his own money.
Gubernatorial candidates may receive $2 in public funds for each $1 they raise in contributions of $100 or less from residents once they raise at least $75,000.
