1st District needs to be redrawn, court says

INTERLOCHEN, MI (MPRN)--   Judges say Michigan’s 1st Congressional District was gerrymandered and needs to be redrawn.

It stretches over most of northern Michigan and the entire Upper Peninsula.

Last November Republican U.S. Congressman Jack Bergman won re-election.

He got 56 percent of the vote in the district. Bergman declined to comment on the court’s decision, saying it’s pending litigation.

In their decision, judges said parts of Bay, Arenac and Iosco Counties were removed from the 1st and added to other districts. Those counties lean Democrat.

Chris Cracchiolo is with the Grand Traverse Democratic Party. He says that likely wasn’t enough to sway the election, but it means the district could be re-drawn.

“They might decide to add Wexford County… or Crawford, I believe, might be another one,” he says.

In a fundraising email the Michigan GOP said Democrats will use the decision to “thwart the will of Michigan voters, overturn our majorities in the State House and Senate, and give Governor Whitmer a clear path to passing her leftist agenda.”
