2015 Holiday Carols & Choral programs

Superiorland Concerts:  Carols in the Cathedral

With the Marquette Choral Society

Features the annual community Christmas holiday concert performed by the Marquette Choral Society at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Marquette, Michigan. Floyd Slotterback who was music director for 28 years retired after the 2014 performance. The group’s new music director, Erin Colwitz, will conduct her first Carols in the Cathedral concert in 2015. During December we will feature encore presentations of previous years as well as the 2015 concert. Each program is 2 hours.

A Rose in Winter: A Garden of Music for the Nativity

Amidst familiar stories of wise men and shepherds, ancient Christmas legends also describe a midnight blooming of plants, trees, and flowers. The acclaimed Rose ensemble explores this miracle of new life amid the cold of winter through gorgeous music honoring the Madonna and Child.

A Handel & Haydn Society Christmas

Monday, Dec. 21 at 11am

Join host Cale Wiggins to celebrate the season with Christmas choral music from the 15th century to the late 20th from America’s oldest continuously performing ensemble, Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society.

Paul Winter Consort: Winter Solstice Celebration

Monday, Dec. 21 at 8pm

John Schaefer hosts this all-new performance, featuring the Paul Winter Consort with Paul McCandless, gospel singer Theresa Thomason, Danny Rivera the “National Voice of Puerto Rico,” and Abdel Salaam’s Forces of Nature percussion and dance ensemble. (2 hrs) Advent Voices Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 11am Join Lynne Warfel for an hour of the most beautiful vocal music inspired by and written for Advent, a time of quiet contemplation and waiting for darkness to become light and for hopes to be realized.

Slavic Wonders: Christmas with the Rose Ensemble

Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 10am

A stunning celebration of the season featuring gems from the libraries and monasteries of Krakow, Prague and Moscow. An engaging and curious mixture of chant, carols, and glorious polyphony.

A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols Live

Thursday, Dec. 24 at 11am

Hosted by Michael Barone, this is a live service with choral and organ music from the chapel of King’s College in Cambridge, England. The King’s College Choir performs the legendary Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. (2 Hrs)

A Rochester Festival of Lessons & Carols

Thursday, Dec. 24 at 1pm

Third Presbyterian Church Choir director Peter DuBois leads the Chancel Choir in a traditional Lessons and Carols service, including music by Boris Ord, Z. Randall Stroope, Bryan Kelly, Richard Purvis and Johann Von Herbeck.

St. Olaf Christmas Festival

Friday, Dec. 25 at 7am

Includes hymns, carols, choral works, as well as orchestral selections celebrating the Nativity and featuring more than 500 student musicians and the St. Olaf Orchestra. (2 Hrs)

Christmas with the Morehouse & Spelman Glee Clubs

Friday, Dec. 25 at 9am

Two of the most prestigious historically black institutions in the nation get together to present a spine-tingling concert featuring encores of the best works of the last several years. It’s a joyous celebration of the schools’ tradition of singing excellence, with their trademark mixture of spirituals and carols. Korva Coleman hosts.

Christmas with The King’s Singers

It’s an a cappella Christmas from England with one of the world’s most celebrated vocal ensembles. The male sextet — consummate entertainers with a delightfully British wit — perform timeless carols, Christmas classics and new arrangements in their impeccable vocal blend.

Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Join the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir, accompanied by the Orchestra at Temple Square, for their annual Christmas concert.

Christmas with Madrigalia

Friday, Dec. 25 at Noon

Centered on the 16th century mass by Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria, this program includes seasonal music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Anton Bruckner, Herbert Howells, Boris Ord and Darmon Meador.

Hope College Vespers

Friday, Dec. 25 at 1pm

Thousands of members of the Holland, Michigan and Hope communities gather for the services each year. Includes Hope’s Chapel Choir, College Chorus, and Symphonette, as well as organists, the flute choir and brass ensemble.

Hans Ahlström is the host of several programs including the daily musical variety show Weekday, the mostly straight ahead jazz show Night Studio, the self explanatory Blues Today, and the eclectic Sound Spectrum. You can also hear Hans as the local host of NPR's All Things Considered news magazine. He also helps manage Public Radio 90's web content, interviews local and visiting writers and artists, works with NMU student interns, and writes the occasional news story.
