Accident on US-2 claims two lives

MACKINAC COUNTY, MI--   Two people were killed in a multiple-vehicle crash on US-2 in Mackinac County Monday.

State Police from the St. Ignace Post say it happened around 3:30 p.m. near H-33. They say a line of traffic was moving eastbound on US-2 when an empty semi-tanker driven by Raymond Pross, 70, of downstate Pinconning collided with a car driven by Kenneth Swartzendruber, 76, of Traverse City. Swartzendruber’s vehicle was forced into a pickup truck driven by Dean Holstrom of Minnesota. The truck was pushed onto the right shoulder of the highway, while the semi and car crossed the centerline, crashed into the woods on the northern side of US-2, and came to rest.

Swartzendruber and his 77-year-old passenger, Audrey Swartzendruber, were killed in the accident. Holstrom, his passenger, and Pross were not injured.

The highway was closed for seven hours while police investigated the scene.

They say neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be a factor at this time.

The accident remains under investigation.
