Additional arrests made in Schoolcraft County drug investigation

MANISTIQUE, MI--    Manistique Public Safety has made more arrests in connection with the trafficking of meth in Schoolcraft County.

The investigation begun last month resulted in the seizure of 85 grams of crystal meth with an estimated street value of $13,000 from a residence.

Officials obtained additional warrants for Ryan St. John, 43, of Manistique, currently in custody from a related February drug arrest. He was arraigned Friday on the following charges:

  • Delivery/manufacture of meth
  • Conspiracy to deliver/manufacture meth
  • Obstruction of justice
  • 3rd-degree money laundering
  • Conspiracy to commit 3rd-degree money laundering

A preliminary hearing for those charges is set for April 3. St. John remains jailed on a $1 million cash or surety bond.
Officers also arrested and arraigned two additional suspects from Manistique. Thomas LaVance, 46, is charged with 3rd-degree money laundering, and conspiracy to commit 3rd-degree money laundering. He remains lodged on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

Stephanie Porter, 38, is charged with 3rd-degree money laundering. She’s lodged in the Schoolcraft County Jail on a $2,500 cash or surety bond.

The Schoolcraft County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
