Additional wolves to be brought to Isle Royale

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK--   Wildlife officials are trying to move up to six starving wolves to Isle Royale National Park, where moose are abundant.

The National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation is working with the International Wolf Center to move the remaining wolves from Michipicoten Island in northern Lake Superior over the next four days. The wolves are at risk because their main winter prey – caribou – are now gone.

Officials say the move will not only save the wolves, it will impact the current moose population on Isle Royale. An estimated 1,600 moose are threatening the ecosystem there. If left unchecked, the moose would over-consume the vegetation.

The effort, which begins either Friday or Saturday, will cost $100,000. The Foundation has raised $30,000 and the International Wolf Center another $45,000. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise the additional $25,000.
