Agency looks to improve senior care in Upper Peninsula

ESCANABA, MI (AP)--   The Michigan Commission on Services to the Aging wants to improve senior care for residents of the Upper Peninsula.

A public meeting held last week at the Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress office in Escanaba focused primarily on residents' comments and concerns regarding senior care in the area. Local officials expressed concern over the difficulty of attracting and retaining workers at senior centers and senior meal programs.

Another topic discussed at the meeting was the lack of transportation option for seniors living in rural parts of the Upper Peninsula.

The Daily Press reports that the commission is recommending that Escanaba be recognized as a Michigan Community for a Lifetime, a program recognizing communities looking to provide better services to seniors in areas including walkability, health care, housing and transportation.
