Alcohol suspected in Houghton County fatal accident

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI--   A Pelkie man died in a traffic crash in Houghton County Thursday. 

Sheriff’s deputies responded around 3:25 p.m. to Tapiola Road near Donken Road. They say a 67-year-old man from Pelkie and a 35-year-old man from Nisula were involved in the crash.

The 67-year-old driver was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Bay Ambulance, Otter Lake First Responders, Otter Lake Fire and Rescue, and Superior Service.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
