Armed Fitchburg man killed by Marinette County deputies

PEMBINE, WI (AP)--   Marinette County sheriff's officials say an armed man was killed by deputies after he advanced on the officers and ignored repeated commands to drop his gun.

Madison police issued a statewide bulletin about Michael D. Rasmussen, of Fitchburg. He had made threats of harm to himself and law enforcement. He was believed headed to Marinette County, where he was believed to have family.

Later Wednesday evening, deputies spotted Rasmussen in the Town of Pembine. They tried to negotiate with him by phone until he stopped his vehicle in the road, and, armed with a gun, approached three deputies. They opened fire, and Rasmussen died at the scene.

No deputies were injured. The three were put on paid leave, as is standard.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
