Attempted armed robbery at El Patron in Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI--   A New Mexico man has been arrested for trying to rob an Escanaba restaurant Monday.

Department of Public Safety officers were called to the El Patron restaurant around 11:30 a.m. and found the

robbery had been thwarted by employees.

Reports indicate a man wearing a mask and gloves and carrying a club entered the business through a back door.  The suspect apparently damaged property inside the restaurant as he tried to get to the cash register.

Employees were able to fight off the man until police arrived.  The suspect exited the back of the building, where he was met by officers and taken into custody.

An air soft pistol was recovered at the scene, along with the club, mask, and gloves.

Officers took the suspect to the Department of Public Safety, where they learned the 21-year-old was a fugitive wanted in New Mexico for armed robbery.  He was lodged in the Delta County Jail on the fugitive warrant, and a charge of attempted armed robbery is being sought through the Delta County Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspect’s name is being withheld, pending formal charges.
