ATV accident severely injures Iowa man

BATES TOWNSHIP, MI--   Serious injuries are reported following an ATV crash in Iron County Saturday.

Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain Post say it happened around 8:40 p.m. on a private trail near Bates-Amasa Road in Bates Township. Troopers say Mathew Stoychoff, 41, of Hudson, Iowa lost control of his ATV while negotiating a curve at a high rate of speed. The ATV hit a tree. Stoychoff was ejected into another tree.

Stoychoff was taken to Aspirus Hospital, Iron River, then airlifted to Wausau, Wisconsin for further treatment.

He was not wearing a helmet. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
