Authorities: Detroit to UP drug smuggling operation targeted

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   Federal authorities say they've broken up a suspected drug smuggling operation between Detroit and the Upper Peninsula.

The Detroit News reports that Lamarol "Shawn" Abram is accused of operating the ring for three years between the state's largest city and Gwinn until the 37-year-old and his girlfriend were indicted in July. They're charged in a drug conspiracy.

Abram is due Sept. 22 in federal court in Detroit. The Associated Press sent a message Thursday seeking comment from his lawyer.

Federal authorities say the ring ran out of homes at Sawyer. Court records say the case stems from a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration investigation into heroin and cocaine smuggling that included the area.
