Be extra careful over Labor Day weekend, NMU president tells students

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University President Fritz Erickson is asking students about to have three days off for Labor Day weekend to be extra careful when it comes to COVID-19.

The state is concerned about case increases in Delta, Iron and Menominee counties. Erickson is asking students not to travel to or through those counties if not absolutely necessary.

He also says some people in Marquette County have ignored mild symptoms of the virus and interacted with people for days. The president stresses people who have any symptoms of the coronavirus need to stay home and avoid class, work and outside activities.

And Erickson says some individuals in the county aren’t helping officials with the contact tracing process. The president is asking students to comply with questions, as successful contact tracing is critical to managing COVID-19 spread throughout the community.

In better Northern news, new COVID testing equipment at the NMU Health Center allows staff to test on-site and get results in 1 to 4 hours instead of 7 to 14 days. And seating charts in classrooms have become invaluable in identifying who needs to be contacted in tracing efforts when a student tests positive.
