Bergman announces DOT grant for Sawyer Airport

SAWYER, MI--   Sawyer International Airport has received a major grant for expansion of a hangar.

Congressman Jack Bergman announced the $1,099,199 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Wednesday. Airport officials applied for the funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Military Airports Program. It will be used to design and engineer the expansion of Hangar 665 so it can service larger aircraft.

The project will also receive $800,000 from the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Aeronautics division. The county has also approved $980,000 in local funding toward the expansion’s $13 to $14 million price tag.

The project is expected to employ about 20 people.
