Bill inspired by Escanaba couple signed into law

LANSING, MI--   A bill-signing ceremony for legislation inspired by an Escanaba couple was held at the state Capitol this week.

On Tuesday Governor Rick Snyder signed the Barbara J. and Thomas J. Swift law.  It creates a one-year pilot program that allows trained law enforcement officers to administrate a saliva test to drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs.

The Swifts were an Escanaba couple who were killed in 2013 after their vehicle was hit by a driver who had THC—the main mind-altering component of marijuana—in his system.

State Senator Tom Casperson sponsored the bill.  He and members of the Swifts' family were present at the bill signing.
