Boater's body found in Hagerman Lake

IRON COUNTY, MI--    Officials have found the body of a man whose boat crashed into an Iron County dock.

The afternoon of Saturday, July 9, a driverless boat hit a dock at Hagerman Lake.  Sheriff’s deputies believed the owner of the boat, 56-year-old Brian Mennecke of Iowa, was out fishing and somehow fell into the water.  Officials failed to find anything after a preliminary search.

Wednesday around 8:30 p.m. Mennecke’s body was recovered by divers from the Michigan State Police Dive Team.  It was found in about 35 feet of water near the dock.

Officials say no foul play is suspected and their investigation remains open.

Assisting in the incident were the Delta County Dive Team, Iron County Search and Rescue, Michigan DNR, Michigan State Police, Aspirus EMS, Iron River Police, Iron County Central Dispatch, Covenant Point Camp, the Hagerman Lake Association, and the Iron County Victim’s Advocate Service.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
