Boaters rescued after vessel capsizes in Marquette Township waters

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Two people had to be rescued after their sailboat capsized on Lake Superior Thursday.

Marquette Township Fire and Rescue responded around 3 p.m. and found the vessel capsized between Middle Island Point and Partridge Island. One person was in the water and the other was with the boat. Another person in a canoe was trying to help the crew.

Rescue personnel reached the crew with a surfboard as the Coast Guard arrived. The sailboat and its occupants were safely taken to shore.

Also assisting at the scene were the Marquette City Fire Department, Chocolay Township Fire Department, Marquette County Special Operations, Marquette County 131, and UPHS EMS.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
