Boy buried in Marquette County sand dune dies

AuTRAIN TOWNSHIP, MI--    A little boy has been killed on the beach in AuTrain Township.

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post say the incident happened Friday at about 12:40 p.m. at a roadside beach area just west of AuTrain.  An 11-year-old boy was digging in a sand dune embankment on Lake Superior when the sand collapsed on him.

Troopers provided life saving measures along with officers from the Department of Natural Resources, the Alger County Sheriff’s Office and Alger EMS. The boy was taken to Munising Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The family had been visiting from out of the area.

The AuTrain Fire Department assisted at the scene.
