Boy safe, suspects in custody following Chippewa County abduction

Chippewa County Sheriff's Office

PARADISE, MI--   A 5-year-old boy has been found safe, after he was abducted from a Paradise home by two men Wednesday night.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office says an Amber Alert was issued for Zephaniau George Cunningham, who was last seen by witnesses shortly after 7 pm at a home on Whitefish Point Road.

One of the suspects, George Stephen Cunningham, was out on parole after his conviction in Ohio for gross sexual imposition with a victim under 13. He allegedly cut off his GPS tether.

Cunningham, the boy, and another suspect, John Stygler, were found out on the ice of Whitefish Bay early Thursday morning. They had apparently driven a pickup truck north on Whitefish Point Road and become trapped, as there is no outlet off the road in the winter.

The three left the truck and walked out onto the ice. Deputies followed their tracks and were able to take the men into custody just after 1 am.

The boy is reportedly fine.

Michigan State Police, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Central Dispatch, and the Whitefish Township EMS assisted in the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
