Car catches fire in Powell Township; driver arrested for OWI

POWELL TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Big Bay woman has been arrested for drunk driving after her car caught fire in Powell Township.

Troopers from the Negaunee Post say the incident happened Sunday around 4 a.m. on County Road 550 near County Road KCH.  They say the 45-year-old driver lost control of her northbound vehicle, which hit a snow bank and became stuck.  As the driver tried to free the vehicle it caught fire and was fully engulfed by the time police arrived.

The woman and her two dogs were able to get out of the vehicle without injury.  She was arrested for operating while intoxicated and lodged at the Marquette County Jail.

The vehicle was completely destroyed.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Powell Township Fire Department and EMS.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
