Cause of Marquette fire under investigation

MARQUETTE, MI--   Authorities continue to investigate a fire at a concrete structure in Marquette Friday night. 

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded just before 10 p.m. to a report of heavy smoke in the area of South Vandenboom Road near Whetstone Road. Deputies found the abandoned structure actively on fire.

Firefighters from Marquette Township Fire and Rescue, the Chocolay Township Fire Department and the Marquette Fire Department extinguished the fire. Marquette Township officials stayed on the scene and investigated the fire until just after 1 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Office is seeking information on suspicious persons or activity in the area of South Vandenboom Road near Whetstone Village Friday. Anyone with information is asked to call the Tip Line at 225-8441.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
