Chippewa County woman dies while trapped inside burning car

BAY MILLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Chippewa County woman is dead after her car crashed and caught fire.

Sheriff’s deputies were called Tuesday around 8:30 p.m. to Lakeshore Drive just east of Ranger Road in Bay Mills Township.  They say a vehicle driven by Rita Sayles, 69, of McNearny Lake failed to negotiate a curve, left the road, hit several trees, and caught on fire with Sayles trapped inside.

Deputies say several people tried to save Sayles by breaking the car’s windows, cutting her seat belt, and trying to extinguish the flames, but the heat from the fire and the bad condition of the car prevented their efforts.

Officials are thanking those who helped at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
