Chocolay River water levels going down

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI--   Flooding of the Chocolay River is abating.

Chocolay Township officials say the mouth of the river was blocked by ice over the weekend. The blockage caused minor flooding in the Bayou Road area and Hotel Place.

Tuesday morning officials said water seems to have found a passage out to Lake Superior and is receding. Water levels have dropped 1.5 to 2 feet in the area.

No property damage has been reported. Any residents in the affected area who have sustained property damage are asked to call Township Department of Public Works Supervisor Brad Johnson at 249-1448.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
