Coast Guard to break ice in St. Mary's River

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The U.S. Coast Guard continues ice-breaking activities this week, in anticipation of the opening of the Soo Locks on Saturday.

Wednesday morning a cutter will conduct spring breakout operations on the St. Mary’s River near Pipe and Drummond Islands.  It will open the Pipe Island Passage and circumnavigate Drummond Island along the International Boundary Line into the North Channel.

The Coast Guard is reminding recreational ice users to plan their activities carefully, use caution on the ice, and stay away from shipping channels that are being groomed for the opening of the shipping season.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
