COVID-19 identified in MCSO employee

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Marquette County Sheriff’s deputy has tested positive for COVID-19.

The jail had initiated testing for inmates and staff as a proactive measure.

The deputy was tested June 2 but there were problems with local testing equipment and samples had to be sent out of the area. The positive result was received Sunday night.

The deputy was asymptomatic and is currently in quarantine. No other cases have been confirmed.

Officials say the case is not believed to be related to an inmate who tested positive for the coronavirus on May 23.

Sheriff Greg Zyburt says plans for the continued testing of staff and inmates are being implemented and protocols are being followed to help reduce the chance of exposure.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
