Details released in fatal Baraga County accident

BARAGA TOWNSHIP, MI--    A L’Anse man was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Baraga Township Thursday.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched around 5:50 a.m. to US-41 north of Menge Creek Road on a report of a head-on crash. Investigation revealed a southbound Toyota SUV driven by Lisa Zasadnyj, 37, of L’Anse was hit head-on by a northbound Nissan van driven by James Turriff, 31, also of L’Anse.

Zasadnyj was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital for treatment. Turriff was pronounced dead at the scene.

US-41 between L’Anse and Baraga was closed to traffic until 9:50 a.m. when one lane of traffic was opened. At approximately 10:50 a.m. the highway was fully open.

The crash remains under investigation.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, Baraga Village Police, and L’Anse and Baraga Fire Departments.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
