Dickinson County Purple Heart statue stolen--and recovered

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police in Iron Mountain are investigating the theft of a Purple Heart statue from the Upper Peninsula Veterans Memorial in Breitung Township.

Troopers say the statue was taken sometime between Tuesday evening and Thursday afternoon.

They say since the theft was discovered the statue has been recovered. The suspects returned and placed the Purple Heart statue—damaged—on the side of the road near the memorial. A Good Samaritan who was driving in the area spotted the statue and notified state police.

Troopers are processing evidence from the scene. They and veterans are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to call state police at 774-2122.
