DNR seeks reports of bull elk from Menominee County

Rob Dunstone

MENOMINEE COUNTY, MI--   The Department of Natural Resources is wondering where a bull elk in Menominee County came from.

The young elk was first reported by a private landowner June 6 about 10 miles from the Wisconsin border. Additional sightings have been reported since then. They include unconfirmed reports of an accompanying cow elk.

The bull has a three-digit orange ear tag in its left ear. It has not been seen clearly enough to be read.

DNR biologists are working with the Wisconsin DNR to determine if the bull came from one of that state’s two wild elk herds. Michigan’s native elk disappeared from the state around 1875.

Anyone who sees the elk is encouraged to call the DNR’s Report All Poaching hotline at 1-800-292-7800.
