Dog finds naked 3-year-old in Rapid River ditch

RAPID RIVER, MI--    A former abused shelter dog is being hailed as a hero in Delta County, after she found a naked 3-year-old girl lying in a ditch in Rapid River.

An unidentified Rapid River woman who now has “Peanut” in her home says the dog was franticly wanting to be let out Friday morning. In a Facebook post on the Delta Animal Shelter page, the woman says once her husband opened the door Peanut sped out to a field behind their home. The dog ran straight to a 3-year-old girl lying, shivering, in a ditch. The man wrapped her in a sweatshirt, scooped her up, brought her to the house, and contacted police.

The girl was taken to OSF St. Francis Hospital for treatment. Officials say she is doing well.

The Delta County Sheriff’s Office says deputies went door-to-door in an effort to find the girl’s parents.  They were eventually found at a nearby home, where deputies discovered unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. The found girl and another young female were removed from the residence and placed with Child Protective Services.

The Delta County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case for possible charges.

Peanut’s mother says, “Thanks to Peanut, a little girl’s life was saved today. She has been such a blessing to us, and now to others.”

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
