Dompierre's story part of Sports Illustrated contest

Sports Illustrated

ISHPEMING, MI--   Ishpeming High School football and basketball player Eric Dompierre’s story is more than heroic; it could win his school thousands of dollars from Sports Illustrated.

The 19-year-old with Down’s syndrome and his father petitioned the Michigan High School Athletic Association to let him play sports past the age of 18.  This year the MHSAA granted his request.

Sports Illustrated visited Dompierre in Ishpeming and included him in a series of short documentaries about inspiring stories of high school football entitled “Underdogs”.  Viewers can watch all ten and vote for their favorite.  The winner’s school will receive $25,000 for its athletics program.

For more information, go to www.sportsillustrated.cnn.com, and under the “special features” tab click “underdogs.”

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
