Driver in Mqt. Township crash could have been using inhalants, officials say

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Officials are blaming substance abuse for a single-vehicle accident in Marquette Township that damaged a building.

Sheriff’s deputies say the crash happened Friday around 6:45 p.m. on Wright Street just north of Commerce Drive.  They say a 29-year-old Marquette woman was northbound when the vehicle swerved off the right side of the road, traveled across a sandy area and struck a building housing Taylor Made Furniture.

The driver was taken to Marquette General Hospital for treatment of her injuries.  The business sustained a large hole in a wall.

Witnesses say the vehicle was weaving and crossing the centerline prior to the crash.  Deputies suspect the driver was using inhalants before the accident occurred.

The crash remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
