Eagle Mine to give details of mineral exploration this year

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   The company operating a nickel and copper mine in Marquette County says it plans to release details of its ongoing mineral exploration efforts later this year.

The Mining Journal of Marquette reports the deposit being explored called "Eagle East" is about 1.5 miles east of Eagle Mine at a depth of roughly 3,300 feet, or about three times as deep as a deposit currently being extracted in Michigamme Township.

Bob Mahin, Eagle Mine's exploration manager, told a recent public meeting: "It's the same kind of mineralization as Eagle ... except it's actually a little higher grade."

Following the discovery announced last year, Eagle Mine mobilized six drilling rigs in December and added another one in January.

Eagle Mine is owned by Lundin Mining Corp. of Toronto.
