Eastern U.P. airport gets federal improvement grant

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Chippewa County International Airport has received federal funding for maintenance and upgrades.

The $1.3 million grant comes from the Federal Aviation Administration.  It will be used to help pay for new snow-removal equipment and to make improvements to the runway and taxiway.

Officials say the upgrades will maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and prevent aircraft damage from debris.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
