Ely Township bridge shut down by MDOT

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Marquette County bridge is permanently closed due to its state of disrepair.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says inspectors have determined the bridge over the Black River in Ely Township is in danger of imminent failure.

Nearly 40 years old, the 33-foot bridge is a half-mile west of County Road 581 off County Road COO. It provides forest access for wildland fire response, timber harvest, and private camps.

The bridge will remain gated and closed to all vehicle traffic until it is replaced. MDOT says a full replacement is likely the most effective solution because of the condition of the bridge superstructure, substructure, and deck.
