MARQUETTE, MI-- A U.P. Energy Roundtable is being held before Tuesday’s meeting of the Michigan Public Service Commission at Northern Michigan University.
A range of issues relating to the U.P. energy landscape will be covered, including utility energy planning, consideration of alternatives beyond fossil-fueled central generation, and opportunities and barriers to self-generation—including both solar and combined heat-and-power.
Specific topics will include utility stand-by rates for cogeneration, including modeling performed by 5 Lakes on both the UPPCO and UMERC stand-by rates and how they compare to other utilities in the Midwest; the STEER-UP modeling and conclusions/ recommendations done by 5 Lakes for MEO; discussion of the UMERC Certificate of Necessity proceeding, including its consideration of alternatives; the IRP process, including the specific focus on UP planning, as well as the IRP's consideration of CHP and energy efficiency/ energy waste reduction; issues affecting solar in the UP, including the statutory cap on NEM installations and the MPSC's development of a new DG tariff; and an update on the Michigan Energy Office-funded CHP Roadmap project.
