ESCANABA, MI-- Escanaba’s coal-fired power plant is shutting down permanently Monday.
One of the plant’s substations blew up in February, and the plant has been shuttered since. Before the explosion the plant had only been running about 10 percent of the time. Escanaba has been purchasing its power from a different source because it’s cheaper than producing it from coal.
City officials have been talking to a Gary, Indiana energy company about the possibility of purchasing the plant and converting it to a facility that uses other fuels.
