Evaluation pending for murder suspect

MARQUETTE, MI--   An Ishpeming man accused of stabbing a Marquette man to death will undergo a competency exam. 

Derek Blemke, 24, is charged with open murder in the death of Brandon LaFavre, 21, at an apartment on Wright Street on June 24.  LaFavre suffered 24 stab wounds.

Blemke will be evaluated to determine if he’s competent enough to stand trial. 

The decision was made Monday at a status conference in Marquette County Circuit Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
